Bobi, The World's Oldest Dog Died At Age 31
Bobi, the world's oldest dog has died at the age of 31.
According to Guinness World Records, Bobi died Saturday in Conqueiros, Portugal where he lived with the Costa family.
Bobi's record
Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, lived to be 31 years and 165 days old. Guinness World Records officially declared him the world's oldest dog. He surpassed the previous record holder, an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who lived to be 29 years and five months old.
A quiet home in Portugal
Bobi spent his entire life in the village of Conqueiros, near the beautiful coast of Portugal. Along with three other siblings born in a barn, his life took a unique turn when he was rescued by the family of Leonel Costa. Leonel was just eight years old at the time. They kept Bobi's existence a secret from their parents and soon he became a beloved member of the family.
Leonel explained, "We gave him the same food we ate and we kept him in a quiet, peaceful environment."
The fame of Bobi
Bobi's fame spread far and wide; people from all over the world loved him. On his 31st birthday, more than 100 people traveled to Portugal to celebrate with him. Journalists and visitors came from Europe, the U.S. and even Japan to take pictures with Bobi.
The secret to Bobi's long life seemed to be his peaceful environment and the love of his family. Although Bobi had a health problem in 2018 when he suddenly collapsed due to breathing problems, he made a strong recovery. In his later years, he faced problems with walking and deteriorating eyesight.
"Is there ever enough time? I think not, veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker - who has seen Bobi several times - wrote Sunday on Facebook. " Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings.
"Despite surviving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him," she added.
The Costa family, who had enjoyed more than 30 years of love and companionship with Bobi, expressed their gratitude for having him in their lives. They considered him a true "warrior."
"Bobi has been a fighter all these years; only he knows how he has endured, it must not be easy because the average lifespan of a dog is not that high, and if he could speak, only he could explain this success," Costa told Guinness World Records. "We are very happy and grateful that life allows us to have Bobi in our daily lives after 30 years."
