Cuddling Dogs Saved From Euthanasia After Photo Of The Two Best Buddies Goes Viral
Much can be said about the pros and cons of social media, but it remains a powerful medium that, when used in the right way and for the right purpose, can do great things.
It took exactly two hours and six minutes for a group of animal lovers to save the lives of two dogs.
But the real standouts here are Kala and Keira.... two beautiful shelter dogs who clung to each other and begged for life.
Their desperate plea for help touched many hearts around the world, and fortunately they were given a second chance at life.
The urgent request
Kala, a brown hound mix, and Keira, a boxer mix, were scheduled for euthanasia when something remarkable happened.
They clung to each other and begged for a chance at life.
Malena Evans of the Etowah County Humane Center took a photo of the two best friends embracing.
Kala had her two front paws wrapped around her best friend, with a desperate look on her face asking for help.
The photo read, "I am Kala. This is Keira. We are so scared here. Keira is black and not a 'real boxer,' just a mix. She is so brave and tells me it will be OK no matter what. She tells me to be brave too, but I don't know if I can be."
"Can you see our faces? Keira knows what is going to happen. You can see it in her eyes. She certainly puts on a brave face, but I can feel her heart beating fast as I cling to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her from me."
The heartbreaking message ended with: "She will not come back and I will cry. Then they will come for me and I won't be so brave. We comforted each other when we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it's over. Unless..."
They had so much life left in them, but unfortunately, like many dogs in overcrowded shelters, they would be euthanized unless the shelter found someone to adopt them right away.
In just a few minutes, the photo of these two adorable puppies cuddling each other was shared thousands of times.
The rescue organization indicated that there was no more time. The situation was as urgent as it could get.
Amazingly, within two hours and six minutes of posting, the two best friends were already on their way to their foster homes.
Adoption challenges
Although they had been saved from euthanasia, Kala and Keira faced another challenge. It was difficult to find someone willing to adopt them together.
Anne Clarke of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue said, "Keira would be fine if she were adopted alone, but Kala would definitely miss her, so we are trying to get them adopted together."
However, the story took a positive turn. Two wonderful ladies from Georgia came forward to adopt Kala and Keira together.
Now these two best buddies live their lives full of love, treats and affection.
Their story took the world by storm and not only saved their own lives, but also put a spotlight on the plight of homeless animals.
With the help of many donors, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue continues to rescue animals in need.
Unfortunately, there will always be another "Kala and Keira" in need of rescue, and stories like these can only be possible if we all work together and show support for the people who work tirelessly to save these sweet animals.
