Instead of waiting to be adopted like all other shelter dogs, this dog decided to find a new home himself - and he did it with style!

As a permanent resident of the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Bellaire, Michigan, that didn't seem to be enough for Scout, so he decided to do something about it!

He escaped in the middle of the night and fled to a nursing home across the street.

The most striking thing was that Scout didn't do this once or twice. He slipped into the nursing home several times after being returned to the shelter, as if trying to say, "This is my home, people. Don't take me back!"

The surprising adventure of Scout

In Bellaire, Michigan, there was a dog named Scout. Scout was not like other dogs. He lived in an animal shelter, but he dreamed of finding a special place he could call his home.

Scout was a smart dog. Instead of waiting for someone to adopt him, he decided to find his own home. He wanted to be with people who needed him most.

One day, Scout did something unimaginable. He escaped from the shelter and found his way to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility nursing home. But this was not an easy trip. He had to sneak out in the middle of the night, climb over several fences, cross a highway and slip through automatic doors to get there.

Scouts cozy hiding spot

Scout had a favorite spot in the nursing home. As soon as he came in, he curled up on a comfortable leather couch in the lobby and fell asleep. He did this several times, showing how much he loved this place.

The nursing home staff thought it might be his fate.

"When Scout kept coming here, we thought maybe it was predestined," said Jennifer Martinek of MBMCF. "We welcomed him to be part of our family. This is where he belongs. He chose us," added Stephanie Elsey, a clinical care coordinator.

The caring Scout

Scout was not just a dog. He turned into a wonderful caregiver. He made everyone in the nursing home happy. "If you're struggling with something, or if everything is going wrong, he makes you feel better. Scout is very happy here," said one of the residents.

But even more heartwarming, Scout had a special place in his heart for people with terminal illnesses or dementia. He could tell when they needed extra care, so he comforted them.

"We can't imagine our lives without him! He completes our Meadow Brook family," the MBMCF team shared on their official Facebook.

A dog with a mission

Scout had a difficult past. He had a hard time in a family that abused him, but he overcame all that. He became a loving caregiver and his story showed us the incredible bond between animals and people.

Scout's story reminds us that sometimes you end up exactly where you are needed. And for Scout, that was at the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, where he brought joy and comfort to those who needed it most.

In the words of residents and staff, Scout really "chose us."
