Dogs are extremely intelligent, protective animals.

This is especially true for herdsmen, who have an important job: watching over their flock and protecting them from danger.

A heroic Pyrenean Mountain Dog went a step further and saved the sheep by fighting off a pack of 11 wild coyotes.

Casper was no ordinary dog; he was a 20-month-old large Pyrenean Mountain Dog and his job was to watch over a flock of sheep and keep them safe.

One day, a pack of 11 wild coyotes appeared near Casper's home.

These coyotes were not friendly; they wanted to attack the owner's sheep.

The owner, Mr. John Wierwille, tried to scare them away and they disappeared for a while.

But unfortunately, they came back later that night.

Fortunately, Casper was ready for action.

When the coyotes were in the barn, Casper fought bravely to protect the sheep.

The battle was intense and lasted 30 minutes.

Casper fought with all his might and amazingly managed to kill 8 coyotes.

The remaining coyotes fled and Casper chased after them, leading the owner to fear the dog had died in the fight.

But after a search, John found his dog, alive but badly injured.

"He looked like he was dead, I mean he looked terrible," John Wierwille said.

"He came home and looked at me along the lines of 'boss stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me.'"

Severe injuries

Casper's heroic efforts came with a price.

He sustained serious injuries to his back and neck, and unfortunately he even lost his tail.

Vets and family were initially unsure if Casper would make it, saying he was found in "bad, bad shape."

But against all odds, Casper is slowly but surely recovering.

"He's lucky to be alive," said veterinarian Susan Brosman of LifeLine Animal Project.

"He looks great now, he's in a good mood," added clinic supervisor Maisie Hale. "I love him. He's such a good boy."

We wish this heroic dog a speedy recovery - thanks for defending these sheep when they were in danger!
