Police Puppy Falls Asleep During Swearing-in Ceremony
Being a police pup is a tough job, especially for young recruits.
For Brody, Monday, April 6, 2020, was a big day ... the new addition to the Bristol Police Department in Rhode Island.
On this day, his official swearing-in took place.
An oath-taking ceremony is a very important moment for new community members. It marks the beginning of their new job.
Unfortunately, Brody's swearing-in ceremony was on Monday and we all know how Mondays are....
While everyone was excited about the ceremony, Brody seemed more interested in something else - sleeping! He slept through the entire ceremony. Officer Keith Medeiros, his partner, had to fill in for him.
A hit on social media
The ceremony was so important that it was broadcast live on Facebook. Everyone watched and saw Brody sleeping on the desk. It was very funny to see and people loved it!
He slept through the entire ceremony and only woke up briefly to pose for the photo.
Agent Medeiros, Brody's owner, told The Dodo:
"He plays very hard and he sleeps very hard. When he's not playing, he's sleeping, which is pretty hard because he sleeps a lot."
Chief's words
Even the police chief, Kevin Lynch, spoke out about Brody.
He said, "This is a great day for the Bristol Police Department and for our future." Police Chief Lynch was very excited about Brody's future, even though Brody was still napping.
Brody's special job
Now you may be wondering what work Brody does. Brody is a comfort and therapy dog.
His job is to meet people in the city, visit schools and nursing homes and comfort those who have been struggling.
Therapy dogs help people cope with stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and various other emotions, they play a very important role in the community.
A meaningful name
Brody's name has a special meaning. The "B" in Brody stands for Bristol and "Rody" stands for Rhode Island. It is a name that emphasizes his connection to the city.
Comfort in a difficult time
Brody's arrival could not have come at a better time. The world was going through a difficult period because of COVID-19.
Medeiros said, "People are really stressed, especially with the police. When you walk into the police station with Brody, people immediately smile. They immediately feel better. They want to pet him, hug him and it's just really good."
Brody's future
Although Brody slept through his oath-taking, everyone knows he will be a superstar in Bristol.
Chief Lynch said, "Once Brody wakes up, we have a lot of successes ahead."
Brody is here to make the city a better place and forge a bond between the community and the police.
Let's welcome Brody to the police force. We wish him many happy years filled with treats, belly massages and lots of sleep.
We know he will do a great job and even when he sleeps, he makes people's lives better.
