Rescued Pit Bull With Tumor The Size Of A Volleyball Gets A Second Chance
Animal shelters do tremendous work by giving pets a second chance.
Some animals arrive in terrible conditions, but they still receive the love and care they need.
Such was the case with Libby, a dog with a tumor the size of a volleyball.
But her story fortunately has a happy ending.
In August, the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, in Washington state, took in a pit bull named Libby.
They told that the dog was "full of life" and had a "sweet face and kind eyes. "
However, Libby also had a serious health problem: a 5-pound tumor the size of a volleyball, one of the largest growths they had ever seen.
"When we saw Libby, the first thing we noticed was her sweet face and kind eyes. The second thing we noticed was the volleyball-sized mass on her shoulder," shelter staff told us.
Libby's brave fight against cancer
A closer examination revealed the heartbreaking truth: Libby had cancer.
The tumor in her paw was so large that it swelled to the size of a volleyball, causing her great pain when moving.
The only way to save her life was to amputate her leg. With an aching heart, the shelter made the difficult decision.
"There was a huge tumor in the bone of her upper right leg, which caused an inflammatory reaction that made her leg the size of a volleyball and she could hardly move in pain," the shelter told us.
Love of the community
The local Tacoma community rallied behind Libby and gave generous donations to cover her medical expenses.
The Humane Society expressed deep gratitude for the tremendous support and recognized the crucial role of community involvement in helping pets in need.
The road to recovery and love
Libby's journey did not end after surgery. During her recovery, she captured the heart of a veterinary technician who cared for her.
Despite knowing about Libby's diagnosis of aggressive bone cancer and her limited time on earth, the engineer decided to adopt her.
"After seeing Libby's loving spirit, it was no surprise what happened next. The vet tech immediately fell in love and decided to adopt sweet Libby," the shelter told us.
In her new home, Libby has now been named Wiggles. She lives happily surrounded by people who love her and enjoys nice naps on the couch wrapped in warm blankets.
"There is something in her eyes that asks for love and protection," Libby's new mother told me. "I couldn't turn away from that."
Despite all the challenges, a little pit bull named Wiggles got a new home. She inspires us all to make a difference for animals in need.
