Sad Dog Abandoned By His Family Meets Rescuer With Tears In His Eyes
Wilbur's world was turned upside down when his family moved and left him behind.
He didn't understand why they were leaving or where they were going.
Confused and scared, Wilbur wandered the neighborhood hoping to find his family again.
A concerned neighbor
Fortunately, a kind neighbor noticed Wilbur's plight.
He saw him wandering the streets, looking sad and hungry.
The neighbor realized that Wilbur's family had abandoned him.
He knew he had to get help.
The concerned neighbor contacted the Tunica Humane Society, an animal shelter specializing in helping animals in need.
They told Sandy Williams, the shelter's director, about Wilbur's situation.
Sandy immediately sprang into action, determined to save the abandoned pup.
A heartbreaking sight
When Sandy Williams arrived at Wilbur's former home, she saw a sign that read "Beware of the dog."
Williams walked cautiously toward the house, not knowing who she would find.
Hearing footsteps, Wilbur emerged from under the porch where he lay.
William's heart broke when she saw what a terrible condition he was in.
He looked weak and scared, with tears in his eyes.
"Every rib on his body could be seen. His face was all sunken in because he had been without food and water for so long. What I remember most was his face full of tears. You could see so much pain and confusion in his sad eyes," Williams says
A glimmer of hope
Despite his fear, Wilbur allowed Sandy to offer him some food.
Hungry and weak, he cautiously approached and began to eat.
This small act showed Sandy that Wilbur was ready to trust again.
Wilbur's rescuer carefully secured him with a belt and took him to her car.
She rushed him to the vet so he could get a full medical checkup and the care he needed.
The vet examined Wilbur and everyone who met him that day was devastated with grief.
He was starving, had possible trauma and heartworms, but somehow he still kept going.
When the people around him showed him nothing but love and care, Wilbur finally began to relax.
"At the vet, I saw a glimmer of hope in Wilbur's eyes," Williams said. "Even though he was terrified of everyone, he responded with a little wag of his tail. The most beautiful moment in the world for a rescuer. That moment when they realize you're just there to help."
Finding love and care
Despite his poor condition, Wilbur showed signs of improvement with proper care and attention.
People from all over the country were touched by Wilbur's story and offered to adopt him.
Eventually, a family decided to adopt him.
They welcomed him into their home with open arms, along with their four other dogs.
Wilbur's new family showered him with love and promised to cherish him forever.
