Old habits are hard to unlearn. Especially if they are fun habits.

A senior Chihuahua, named Scooter, was abandoned by the family of his deceased owner.

After caring for and loving the dog for 10 years, the family no longer wanted him and sent him to a shelter.

But the bond between owner and dog is not easily broken.

The 12-year-old Chihuhua was confused and saddened by this series of events and had a hard time adjusting to the new environment.

As if the death of his owner and being abandoned by the remaining family wasn't enough, Scooter also had problems with his hip.

This made it even more difficult to find a new home.

The folks at the Humane Society of Branch Count in Michigan, posted pictures of Scooter snuggled up, hoping someone would soon see how sweet he was.

Scooter ended up in a new environment, a shelter for homeless animals. The change was tough on the little Chihuahua.

He not only mourned the loss of his owner, but also had problems with his hip. Life at the shelter was confusing and lonely.

The folks at the Humane Society of Branch County in Michigan noticed Scooter's sweet nature.

They posted pictures of him hoping someone would see how special he was. In the pictures, Scooter was snuggled under a blue blanket and looked so cute.

The dog's calm nature and independence did not take long to attract the attention of suitable adopters.

Jessica Lynn Howard helps

One day friendly Jessica Lynn Howard saw Scooter's photos on social media. She and her husband, touched by Scooter's story, decided to give him a new home.

A bedtime ritual

Despite his difficult past, Scooter brought joy to Jessica's home. Every night he had a special bedtime ritual.

"When it's bedtime ... He still tucks himself in. I've tried tucking him in, but he prefers to do it himself. He has to do the blankets just right. It's really cute to watch him."

Inspiration for others

Scooter's story did not end there. Many people from all over the United States wanted to adopt him.

Scooter, however, already had a new family. Still, they were so inspired by Jessica's enthusiasm for adopting older dogs that they did the same.

Scooter's influence went far beyond his own adoption. Jessica received messages from people inspired by Scooter's story.

People sent her pictures of the older dogs they had adopted from shelters across the U.S., and that they were all inspired by this Chihuahua's life story.

They also adopted older dogs, making a big difference.
