Shelter dog waited 500 days to be adopted, but was returned after a week 1

Can you imagine the enormous sadness Drogo probably felt when he was returned just a week after being adopted, after spending 500 days at the shelter.

For many shelter dogs, days turn into years as they patiently wait for the warmth of a loving home.

Some dogs find homes fairly quickly, while others, like Drogo, must endure long periods of uncertainty, hoping for a better future.

Life within the walls of a kennel is certainly an improvement over life on the streets.

But the monotony of seeing the same four walls for more than two years is sure to affect each dog's well-being.

A sad beginning

Drogo's story began when his owner could no longer keep him.

The owner promised to return, but days became weeks and weeks became months.

Drogo ended up at the Austin Animal Center.

At the shelter, Drogo waited patiently and watched as others came and went.

He became the shelter's longest resident and was loved by everyone, especially Jessica, a volunteer who could do nothing but love him.

"I know you're not supposed to have favorites.... but Drogo is my favorite. He thinks he's a lap dog and we haven't had the guts to tell him otherwise. Drogo is housebroken, doesn't bark much and gets along well with my 6-year-old son. He is a friend to everyone he meets and quickly became the favorite of volunteers. Drogo has been at the shelter for a year now, one of the dogs that stay at the shelter the longest, and he is so ready for a home of his own," said Jessica, one of the ACC's volunteers.

Adoption and grief

One day, happiness came for Drogo. Someone adopted him and for a moment he felt the warmth of a home.

Unfortunately, Drogo was back at the shelter a week later.

Drogo was devastated, as was everyone at the Austin Animal Center.

"We are all very disappointed that Drogo was returned to the shelter so quickly. He was one of the dogs who stayed at the shelter the longest, and now he's back. He is devastated. It's not fair," one of the shelter employees wrote on TikTok.

Determined asylum

The shelter didn't give up on Drogo. They worked harder, made videos and wrote posts about him.

@goodboygonehome We are all crushed that Drogo was returned to the shelter so quickly. He was one of the longest stay dogs at the shelter and now he’s back again. He’s devastated. Thousands of people read the articles, but Drogo was still waiting for a forever home.

@goodboygonehome 74 pets found forever homes today at the annual Clear the Shelters event. So happy for all of them! Sadly, Drogo wasn’t one of them. He’s still waiting for his own family @Austin Animal Center #cleartheshelters #austinanimalcenter #austinanimalshelter #longstay #adoptme #pitbullsoftiktok #pitbulllove #shelterdog #dogsoftiktok #animalshelter ♬ original sound - sweetsaudioz

An employee pleaded in a video: "He is housebroken, loves to walk and is so sweet. Please have someone take him home!"

A birthday wish

When Drogo celebrated his 4th birthday and 550th day at the shelter, volunteers threw a birthday party for him.

They had one wish - that Drogo would find a real, permanent home.

A happy ending

Drogo, the sweet boy who had to endure so much, finally found a home.

The shelter posted on Facebook, "Drogo was adopted today after more than 500+ days at the shelter.

The shelter went on to write, "Drogo, you sweet boy.... you now (hopefully) have a forever home and a person who can heal your broken heart.

Enjoy the rest of your life!"
