Starving Dog Ate All She Could To Stay Alive After Being Abandoned
Imagine coming across a dog lying hopelessly in a small kennel on a freezing day.
Such was the life of Prima, who had been abandoned by her owners in the winter.
Poor Prima was very skinny and ate everything she could to stay alive, but that almost killed her.
When she was discovered, Prima was so sick she did not have long to live.
She quickly needed medical attention to survive.
A call for help
Two friendly volunteers, Jannel and Robby, discovered Prima while walking through a local park in Houston, Texas.
They saw her lying in a kennel, barely able to move.
Prima's belly was distended and her ribs were visible.
Jannel and Robby knew they had to help her.
The volunteers offered her some food and water, which she cautiously accepted.
"I was shocked when she came out. She was starving with a very large stomach. I immediately started calling, knowing she needed to be rescued immediately," Janell wrote on Facebook.
The rescue mission
Jannel and Robby immediately contacted Corridor Rescue Inc, an organization that helps animals in need.
They carefully brought Prima to the shelter, where she received food, water and medical care.
Despite her fear, Prima trusted that her rescuers would take care of her.
"This girl was so starving that when she was dumped, she ate everything she came across and kept eating," Corridor Rescue wrote.
A terrible diagnosis
At the vet, Prima received a heartbreaking diagnosis: end-stage heartworm disease.
This meant that the worms in her heart were advanced and difficult to remove.
She was considered a hospice patient at the time, and the rescuers' only goal was to place Prima in a comfortable foster home where she would feel safe and loved.
According to her rescuers, Prima underwent a life of neglect and suffering.
Despite her unknown past, it is clear that this dog was cruelly dumped and mistreated, which ultimately led to Prima developing long-term trauma.
Besides her physical condition, this girl also had a hard time adjusting to a new environment and people because she was severely traumatized.
Last hope
After careful consideration, the veterinary team decided that her only option would be invasive, rapid treatment for heartworm.
That meant a lot of injections in a few months.
This treatment was Prima's last hope, and the rescue team wanted to give her a chance.
They also made sure she received fluids and food every few hours and antibiotics to help her.
As Prima underwent treatment, she continued to improve.
Her distended belly lessened and she began to feel much better.
Everyone was surprised when her heartworms began to disappear.
Despite the setbacks, Prima showed incredible resilience and determination to survive.
A new beginning
After months of treatment and care, Prima was ready for a new chapter in her life.
She found a loving family who welcomed her with open arms.
Prima's new family gave her the love and attention she deserved, and she blossomed into a happy, playful dog.
Thanks to the amazing rescuers who didn't give up on her, Luna now has a whole new life ahead of her!
