Stray dog waits outside an animal shelter and sticks his paw out for help 1

Dogs end up in shelters in different ways.

Some have owners who can no longer care for them, while others are rescued from the streets.

But recently, a stray dog arrived at an animal shelter on its own - with its paw outstretched as if asking for help.

Bionca Smith, the owner of Off the Grid Animal Sanctuary, noticed one day that the dogs were barking excitedly.

When she looked outside, she saw a stray dog waiting just outside the gate, as if he knew this was where he could find help.

The encounter

Bionca went outside to meet the stray dog.

"I could tell he was looking for help, but his look was still a little intimidating to me for a moment," she she wrote on Instagram.

"I was afraid he would bite me. He might have been afraid I would hurt him."

Despite their initial reluctance, a wonderful moment unfolded.

Bionca held out her hand and the stray dog responded by extending its paw, as if to say:

"I am ready to be saved."

This simple gesture marked the beginning of a renewed trust between the two.

Warm welcome to the asylum

Now that trust had been established, Bionca brought the dog to the shelter, where he received a warm greeting from Kumo, the "guard dog" and alpha of the pack.

The dog, now called Deputy, was then quarantined to ensure its health and safety.

In an update, the shelter announced, "Deputy is doing great and living the dream in his new environment."

Video footage captured the incredible transformation, with Deputy, once a sad-looking stray dog, now happily running around with other dogs.

A huge change

"We are getting to know Deputy better and better and he is a wonderful, happy dog! His behavior is completely different from the dog who came to us sad and scared and still asked for help!" the shelter said.

It is unknown if Deputy will be adopted, but it is clear that he has progressed incredibly and loves his new home.

What a touching moment to see this dog stick his paw out to ask for help - we are so glad Deputy is doing well under the care of the animal shelter!
