Veterinarian Crawls Into Kennel To Sleep With Dog Seriously Injured In Fire
Taka's life almost ended in a house fire.
The home of the 8-year-old Shiba Inu dog caught fire while he was in a covered porch.
No matter how hard his family tried, they could not reach him in time and had to run out of the house.
Fortunately, Taka managed to escape from the porch under his own power and ran into the street.
A good neighbor eventually found him and rushed him to Care More Animal Hospital in Martinez, Georgia.
Taka's pain and healing
When Taka arrived at the hospital, the veterinarians saw that he was badly injured. He had burns on his eyes, mouth, ears and abdomen. He was going blind.
Taka was having trouble breathing, so the team took him to a special clinic where he could use a machine to breathe better.
After a few days, Taka got stronger and went back to Care More Animal Hospital.
Everyone there worked hard to make him feel better.
A special bond
"I try to treat all of my patients the same way, but his case pulled at my heart a little more," Emily Martin said. "When he came in, he was squealing in pain ... but he calmed down the moment you sat down with him and sang to him."
Emily spoke with Taka's family shortly after his arrival at the animal hospital and they eventually surrendered Taka to Emily for the sake of his health.
Because the hospital is not open 24 hours a day, Emily took Taka home one night so he wouldn't have to sleep alone.
"I was up all night with him, so the next day we were both exhausted," Emily said.
The next day at the hospital, Emily crawled into Taka's kennel and they took a nap together. A colleague of Emily's captured the moment in a photo.
For Emily, one of the most special qualities of Taka is how sweet he is, despite all he has been through.
"He doesn't have a mean bone in his body," Martin said. "Often when animals are in pain, they start biting, just because they're in pain, but he hasn't tried to bite once. In fact, he feels comforted by people."
Community support and Taka's personality
Taka's road to recovery was still uncertain, but he ate and took care of himself. The best part was that the community heard about Taka's story and raised money to pay his medical bills. They knew Taka was something special.
As Taka began to feel better, his personality emerged. He loved belly massages, good food and cuddling with people. He was a friendly and strong dog.
What's next for Taka?
Emily Martin, who loved Taka so much, thought about adopting him. But she already had many dogs and a baby, so it was a difficult decision. When Taka finds a new home, Emily wants it to be with people who will take good care of him and know how special he is.
Taka's story teaches us that we can find hope even in difficult times and that there are kind people who want to help. Taka's courage and the love of the community show us that we can make a difference and that even a small act of kindness can change a life.
